Advertising and Publicity
Make sure the play is publicized in local and school media; produce fliers to hand out to students, post at school, and distribute to cast members. Arrange materials for elementary students to make posters at dress rehearsal and put them up at school. Coordinate visit to Thurston classrooms by a group of actors in costume. Be sure to get the word out to the Ann Arbor News, Ann Arbor Observer, Clague & Huron. Assist with publicizing show on social media.
Backdrop Puller
Rig and pull all backdrop flats during full rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and performances. Required to wear dark clothing.
Cast Refreshments Crew
Obtain and supervise service of refreshments at intermission for cast and crew during dress rehearsal and all three nights of the performances.
Children Cast and Children’s Cast Party Refreshment Crew
Setup and clean-up of children’s refreshment tables during each performance. Set up and clean up food tables at children’s cast party, usually held in early June. May also be asked to buy some food and supplies for both performances and for party.
Child Room Supervisor
Supervise K-5 actors in the music rooms during rehearsals and performances. Organize the children for the make-up artists, line up children for cue runners, keep the children safe and in the rooms during the shows and rehearsals, and monitor the cleanliness and equipment of the music rooms.
Choreographer
Choreographs assigned musical numbers and works with the director to make sure choreography works with blocking. Works closely with Lead Choreographer and Music Directors.
Costume Coordinator
Work with costume director to coordinate design, purchase, and/or sewing of costumes for a group of characters (usually actors grade k – 5). Will need to communicate to parents what the costume will be and may need to organize costume-making workshops for parents. Will purchase costume materials and be reimbursed from costume fund.
Cue Runner
This is a critical job which needs a person with good organizational skills. This person is responsible for knowing who needs to be ready to go onstage in each scene and for sending the cue runners to locate actors/actresses whose scenes are coming up. Cue Chief and Cue Runners are responsible for the K-5 grade but any help to middle, high school and adult is appreciated. Should attend some early rehearsals to become familiar with play, plus rehearsals and performances from mid-March on.
Curtain Puller
Open and close main and second-act curtains during full rehearsals, dress rehearsals, & performances. Required to wear dark clothing.
DVD Distributor
Distribute DVDs to cast members who have ordered them. Best for someone who lives near Thurston/Clague. This job is done in the spring after the show.
Graphic Designer
Assist art director, playbill designer, and webmaster with designing creative art for printed and digital materials. Must have knowledge of graphics software such as Adobe Creative Suite.
Lights
Assist Lighting Director with rigging and setting all lighting tracks for set design.
Make-up Artist
Work with costume designers to design make-up for different characters, purchase and organize make-up, assign make-up artists to actors, and oversee make-up process. Create templates for Make-Up Artists to work from and explain process to Make-Up Artists. Coordinate with Children’s producer on timing of make-up so groups going on earlier get done first.
Apply stage make-up (according to directions from the Make-up Crew Chief) to child and adult actors at first dress rehearsal and performances. Help keep the make-up area clean after each performance.
Pianist
Will play piano accompaniment at music/dance rehearsals in January- March rehearsals and at performances.
Playbill/DVD Design and Printing
Playbill – Design playbill and arrange for printing. Work with Advertising Team to include business and family ads. Work with producers and job leads to get cast and crew list and lyrics. This job is done in the weeks before the show and requires adhering to strict deadlines.
DVD – In April or May, the videographer will provide the edited video of the show ready for duplication. The DVD designer will put together the DVD booklet with photos and the cast and crew list (much of this is the same content used in the playbill). The DVD and booklet will then be delivered to a professional duplication service.
Experience with proofreading and publishing helpful.
Prompter
Sits at the front of the stage with script to remind actors of lines.
Props
Build, design, and obtain props. Work directly with Props Lead. Hand out, set up, and organize props during rehearsals & performances
Set Painting and Building
Paint and build backdrops, sets and props. Move equipment and organize supplies. Volunteers that are willing/able to use power tools are welcome. All volunteers and ages are welcome (friends, visitors, actors, grandparents, moms, dads, kids). Not a childcare drop-off–elementary school children must have adult chaperone. Must wear old clothes that can be paint-stained.
Sewing
Sew costumes and other items as necessary. Work closely with Costume Coordinators and Costume Director.
Sound
Assist Sound Director with rigging and setting all sound tracks for performances.
Spot Lights
Work large spot lights in audience and overhead catwalk during dress rehearsals and performance nights. Non-acting middle or high school students preferred.
Stage Crew
Move sets, hold flats, and work equipment and backdrops during rehearsals and performances. Required to wear dark clothing. Required to work Set Building & Painting job to learn skills.
T-shirt Distribution
Distribute t-shirts to cast and crew who ordered shirts.
Ticket and Concessions Sales
Ticketing – Help House Manager with maintenance of the ticketing website and processes, ticket availability, and cash processing/deposit to the treasurer. Schedule ticket sales crew shifts.
Concessions – Facilitate purchase of concessions items and schedule sales crew shifts. Assist with cash processing and deposit with treasurer.
Yard Sign/Poster Distributor
This person will work closely with our Publicity Chair to distribute yard signs about one month before the show and collect yard signs after the show is finished. We would also like this person to distribute posters and cards for advertising throughout the Ann Arbor area.
